What is Pillow?

A pillow is a cushion that is used to support the head, neck, or other parts of the body while sleeping or resting. They make pillows from a variety of materials, such as feathers, foam, cotton, synthetic fibers, and even memory foam. Pillows come in a range of shapes and sizes, and there is something to suit every sleeping position and comfort preference. We can use them as decorative items and they can even provide therapeutic benefits.

The perfect pillow for you depends on your individual needs and preferences, including the position in which you sleep. In other words, your sleep position determines what kind of support you need in a pillow.

Benefits of Pillow

Prevents Back Pain
Most people end up using pillows that don’t support the natural curve of the spine. Multiple pillows might lead to an unnatural sleeping position. The support pillows provide is also not long-lasting.

Helps Deal with Neck Pain
Most pillows fail to offer the right support and make sleeping postures worse. If you don’t use pillows, your head rests in a natural position. It also prevents nerve damage and strained muscles so you experience less pain. Pillows that are too soft also disrupt blood flow to the neck.

Combats Headaches
You might have experienced waking up with a headache or feeling light-headed. Your pillow might be to blame. Try sleeping without a pillow and see if you feel better the next day. Sleeping with soft pillows reduces blood flow to the head, cutting off part of the usual oxygen supply to the head. Morning headaches could be due to the disruption of oxygen distribution to your head.

Alleviates Stress
If you sleep in the wrong position due to pillows, you might end up tossing and turning throughout the night. This increases stress which, in turn, may lead to other mental and health issues. Once you experience fewer sleep disturbances, the quality of sleep helps the body level down stress hormones. Moreover, after a restful night sleep, you may feel increased energy the next day.

Pillow Sizes

The most common pillow size is a standard pillow, but this pillow is too small for larger beds and causes unwanted gapping between pillows. Larger pillows, such as king and queen size, are a better choice for larger mattress sizes.

Standard
A standard pillow measures 20 inches wide and 26 inches long and fits with both standard and queen-sized pillowcases. One standard pillow fits on a twin bed, two pillows fit on full and queen beds and three pillows fit on king beds.

Super Standard
A slightly larger variation of a standard pillow is the super standard pillow. The super standard pillow is 2 inches longer than a standard pillow, measuring 20 by 28 inches, and is helpful if you tend to roll off your pillow at night. You can fit one super standard pillow on a twin bed, two super standard pillows on queen and full beds, and three super standard pillows tightly on an Eastern king bed.

Queen
Queen pillows are 20 by 30 inches and fit well on queen and king beds. You can also use a singular queen pillow on a twin bed or squeeze two pillows onto a full bed. Queen pillows work with both standard and queen size pillowcases, but loftier queen pillows might be tight in standard pillowcases and cause them to feel firm.

King
King pillows are one of the largest rectangular pillows, measuring 20 inches wide and 36 inches long. Two king pillows fit the width of king beds, but also work as a small body pillow, and one pillow fits a king-size pillowcase or tightly in a queen-size pillowcase.

Travel
Travel pillows are small rectangular pillows, measuring 12 by 16 inches. They’re small and easy to carry around when you’re traveling by plane or car, but they’re also a good everyday pillow for toddlers and young children.

Type of Pillow

Down Alternative
Down alternative pillows are typically filled with a synthetic fiber that's designed to mimic real down. These types of pillows are also hypoallergenic and less expensive than their down counterparts since they are often made from polyester. Even though it's not real down and won't be as lofty, the quality is often just as impressive. Our Lab experts were blown away with how well the Tuft & Needle Down Alternative Pillow Set stood up to pressure and held its shape.

Memory Foam
Memory foam pillows can come either as one solid foam piece that offers cradle-like support in varying firmness levels or as a cluster memory foam pillow that has bits of memory foam inside. With these pillow types, the height is adjustable and the shiftable pieces allow sleepers to move the fill to their comfort as they change sleep positions throughout the night. Testers who prefer firm support particularly liked Tempur-Pedic's Tempur-Neck Pillow, which is solid foam in ergonomically designed shape.

Latex
Like memory foam, latex pillows can be either solid or in clusters, with solid pillows giving more structure and cluster pillows being adjustable. Because natural latex comes from the rubber tree, it can often be a more sustainable alternative to memory foam, like Naturepedic's Organic Latex Pillow. It also has more bounce than foam and is immediately soft when you lay your head down, but may not completely mold to the shape of your head. These types of pillows are very durable and will hold their shape for years.

Gel
You’ll often see gel infused pillows rather than an entire gel pillow. The gel can be dispersed throughout memory foam or alone as an outer layer on a foam pillow. The gel is often designed to give a cooling effect and help keep the heat away from your head as you sleep. We recommend the Ice Gel Pillow from Blu Sleep, which has a cool-to-the touch feel and proved to be supportive and comfortable in our tests.

Kapok
Kapok is a natural fiber that comes from a tree and is smooth like silk with the fluffiness of cotton. It's not as common as other fills, but the Layla Kapok Pillow blends this fill with foam and was a top scorer in our tests for its surprisingly plush yet supportive feel.

Pillows and Sleeping Position are Also Important

Your sleeping position determines the pillow firmness and loft (height) you need to sleep comfortably and maintain healthy spinal alignment. Your pillow shouldn’t be so tall it makes your neck curl inward, nor so thin your head and neck curve backward.

Back Sleepers
Back sleepers need a medium loft pillow (4 to 5 inches) and between a medium to medium-firm firmness to keep their head and neck in line with their spine.

Side Sleepers
Side sleepers’ heads are far from their beds, so they need a high loft (5 to 7 inches) pillow to fill the gap between their head and their mattress. Medium firmness is best for side sleeper pillows so their heads are properly cushioned but still kept in line with their spines.

Stomach Sleepers
Firm and thin loft (3 inches or less) pillows are best for stomach sleepers since stomach sleepers don’t need much height. Stomach sleepers can also use medium loft pillows and only rest their forehead against the pillow so sleepers can lay face-down and prevent neck stains.

Combo Sleepers
Since combination sleepers sleep in two or more positions, it’s difficult to determine an exact loft and firmness suited for them. Instead, combo sleepers should try an adjustable pillow, such as shredded memory foam or latex pillow, because their firmness and loft are moldable.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Pillow Filling

Down or feathers: These pillows are filled with the soft inner feathers of geese or ducks. Down is very light and offers little support, while feathers are usually harder and may even poke through the fabric of the pillow cover. If you suffer from allergies frequently, it may be better to avoid both down pillows and feather pillows.

Latex: Made from the sap of rubber trees, natural latex is hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites and mildew. Latex is responsive and provides contouring support that conforms to your head and neck. It also tends to be a more breathable material than memory foam or down, giving you better temperature regulation at night.

Memory foam: Made from polyurethane, memory foam pillows provide good support, especially if you have neck, jaw, or shoulder problems. Although memory foam conforms well to your head and neck, the material doesn’t “breathe” and can make you feel hot. Memory foam can also take time to re-mold into different shapes if you move around a lot in your sleep.

Synthetic fill: A down alternative, synthetic fill is usually made from polyester material and is hypoallergenic and machine washable.

Wool or cotton: Natural wool and organic cotton are good options if you suffer from severe allergies, as these materials aren’t susceptible to dust mites or mold. But they’re typically quite firm and don’t compress well.

Pillows Manufacturing Process

01/

Raw Material And Amount Of Production:
Headrests are primarily stuffed with materials such as synthetic polyester, feathers or the combination of feathers and downs. The cheapest headrests are being manufactured using polyester which are the most durable and easy washable with least allergic reactions.

02/

Covering Construction:
The very first construction in headrest manufacturing is the covering. A cotton-polyester or sturdy cotton fabric is shipped to factory in larger bolts which are treated there so that the casing that sewn can easily be separated while filling them.

03/

Fabric Sewing:
The rectangular-shaped fabric stacks are then taken to sewing machines for grabbing and sewing them together. The machine operator sews two pieces of the fabric around the edges while leaving space for stuffing them later.

04/

Case Filling:
To fill the case from polyesters, they are moved to machines already loaded that blows the polyester in these casings through the tubes loaded through blowers. Different machines perform dissimilar functions for filling these casings.

05/

Closing The Openings:

After filling the headrest casings from polyester, they are then taken to another platform where workers close their openings with the help of an industrial machine. Later, these filled casings are weighted on the same platform to ensure that all of them contain the required and predefined amount of batting into them.

06/

Additional Casings:
When the openings are all covered, these headrests are then shifted to another station where machines bag them. Thin plastic bags are used to insert these casings into them individually. Later, when they are all bagged, they are packed into boxes for shipping.

How do you Clean and Care For Pillows?

Most people don't think twice about pillow care. They just plop their pillow on the bed and hope for the best. But if you want your pillow to last, you need to take a few simple steps to keep it clean and fresh.

Step 1: Air it out
Giving your pillows a daily fluff is the best way to keep them looking and feeling their best. This simple task helps to restore their shape and remove dust. For an extra deep clean, hang them outdoors on a clothesline for a few hours every month or so. If you can't hang them outside, running them through the dryer on the no-heat cycle is a good alternative.

Step 2: Wash it gently
You should wash your pillow at least every 4 to 6 months. If you sweat a lot, have a habit of eating in the bed, or have pets with whom you share your bed, you should wash it more often. Washing a pillow is not difficult, but it does take some time to dry.

FAQ

Q: What is the purpose of a pillow?

A: Pillows serve to keep the upper body in alignment during sleep, relieving pressure and counterbalancing the points in the body. The pillow should adjust to fit one's unique shape, curves, and sleeping position and alleviate any pressure points.

Q: Is it better to sleep without a pillow?

A: Some people who sleep on their front may benefit from sleeping without a pillow. It may aid in maintaining the posture of the neck and spine as you sleep, reducing neck and back pain. However, not everyone should do it. Without a pillow, those who sleep on their back or side may experience neck or back pain.

Q: Why sleep hugging a pillow?

A: Holding a pillow while you sleep mimics the sensation of being hugged or embracing another person, providing a profound sense of security. This feeling of safety can be exceptionally comforting for those who struggle with loneliness or vulnerability.

Q: What is a pillow supposed to do?

A: When lying on the back, a pillow should support the natural curvature, or lordosis, of the cervical spine, with adequate support under the head, neck, and shoulders. Pillow height should be lower than for side sleepers. Placing another pillow or two beneath the knees further alleviates any back strain.

Q: Why do they call it a boyfriend pillow?

A: It's called the Boyfriend Pillow. Essentially, this thing serves as a bedtime substitute for the missing man in your life. Feel the warmth and security as you curl its plush arm around your body and rest your head on the half-chested slab of memory foam that oddly happens to be wearing a full button-down shirt to bed.

Q: Why is it called a husband pillow?

A: There are a few different theories on why it's called a husband pillow. One theory suggests that because the design includes a backrest and armrests, it resembles the upper part of a person's body—similar to how a husband may hold someone.

Q: What does it mean when someone sleeps with a lot of pillows?

A: Some people who sleep with multiple pillows do so to enhance their comfort and address specific needs. These pillows can provide support to various body parts, such as the head, neck, or legs, promoting better alignment and reducing pressure points.

Q: Why do we need pillow to sleep?

A: Pillows are important because they keep the head aligned with the neck and backbone during sleep. If a person's spine or neck is not in a neutral position, they may wake up during the night, causing sleep loss. According to the National Sleep Foundation, the goal should be to keep the head in a neutral position.

Q: Why do guys sleep with pillows between their legs?

A: Putting a pillow between your knees or thighs has the potential to help you maintain the natural alignment of your hips and pelvis while you sleep. This improved alignment may help take the strain off inflamed ligaments or muscles that are causing your discomfort.

Q: What does queen pillow mean?

A: A queen pillow measures 20 by 30 inches (51 x 76 cm). Queen pillows aren't as common as standard pillows, but they can also fit in a standard pillowcase. Queen pillows are designed to fit queen beds and will fit more precisely since they're four inches longer than their standard counterparts.

Q: Is it OK if I sleep without a pillow?

A: Some people who sleep on their front may benefit from sleeping without a pillow. It may aid in maintaining the posture of the neck and spine as you sleep, reducing neck and back pain. However, not everyone should do it. Without a pillow, those who sleep on their back or side may experience neck or back pain.

Q: Are pillows really necessary?

A: Without a pillow to support the head, side and back sleepers may experience stiffness or soreness in the lumbar or cervical spine. Referred neck pain from not using a pillow may also contribute to tension headaches. Even when stomach sleepers don't use a pillow, neck pain isn't necessarily unavoidable.

Q: Why do humans need pillows?

A: Spending prolonged periods in the same position during sleep can place stress on certain parts of the body, such as the back and neck. Pillows are designed to minimize this stress by supporting the head at a comfortable level, helping take pressure off the cervical area and straighten out the spine.

Q: Is it OK if I don't use a pillow?

A: Sleeping without a pillow can keep your head flat. This may reduce some stress on your neck and promote better alignment. But this doesn't apply to other sleeping positions. If you sleep on your back or side, sleeping without a pillow may do more harm than good.
