What is Pillow Case?

Most people are familiar with pillowcases as they are a bedroom essential. The main functionality of a pillowcase is to protect the pillow you use while asleep. Usually, pillowcases will be open slit at one end and closed at the other. They have a simple minimalist look, but the outer material is soft and cozy, giving you a comfortable place to rest.

Pillow case will also have different textured patterns to create a decorative look that matches your bedspread. When arranging pillows on a bed, pillows with shams are usually placed in front of your pillows with cases to give your bed a sleek look.

Benefits of Pillow Case

Easier Cleaning

It’s easier and more hygienic to wash pillowcases regularly than whole pillows. This helps maintain better sleep hygiene and ensures the pillows remain fresh.

Durability

By keeping pillows covered, pillowcases help prevent wear and tear on the pillows themselves, extending their useful life.

Aesthetic appeal

Pillowcases come in a wide variety of colors, patterns, and fabrics, allowing for easy customization of the bedroom decor. They can be changed to match the season, holiday, or simply to update the room’s look.

Allergy Relief

For allergy sufferers, hypoallergenic pillowcases can help reduce exposure to dust mites and other allergens that commonly collect in pillows.

Type of Pillow Case

Housewife pillowcase
We’re starting with the most popular and common type of pillowcase that you can find in every home, and that design is known as Housewife. These types of pillowcases have one side that is sewn closed and the other side has a wide opening in which you fit your pillowcase.

Oxford pillowcase
Next on our list is the Oxford pillowcase, which is also very common but a bit fancier than the traditional Housewife pillowcase. The edges are encircled with a border that is approximately two inches wide, and the Oxford pillowcase is typically seen as decorative.

Bag style pillowcases
However, the difference is that there isn’t an inner flap that will keep the pillow inside the pouch. Instead, people who use Bag pillowcases often fold the opening flap, tuck it under the pillow itself, and that is how they keep it in place.

Throw pillowcases
As you can probably guess from the name itself, throw pillowcases are used solely for throw pillows. These pillows are intended for decorative purposes and you can throw them anywhere you want to add a splash of style, no matter if it’s your bed, couch, or chair.

The Five Most Common Fabrics for Pillowcases

After a long day, nothing beats snuggling into a bed with clean sheets, plump pillows, and a warm comforter. The quality and softness of your pillowcase will determine how much you enjoy this experience. You can get the best material if you buy your pillowcases separately rather than as part of a set with the sheets.

Cotton
Cotton is frequently used because it is a comfortable and affordable option for pillowcases. It's available in a range of thread counts, is pleasing to sleep on due to its coolness and absorbency, and can be cleaned quickly and easily.

The most common material for pillowcases, cotton has some drawbacks despite its widespread use. It's not ideal because the fabric tends to bunch up and leave temporary crease marks on your face.

Nylon
Nylon, another popular material for pillowcases, is often crafted to resemble silk. It's simple to clean and quick to dry, but the lack of absorption can lead to perspiration on your face.

Linen
People no longer mass-produce linen, even though it is a natural flax product of exceptionally high quality. Linen has a distinctive texture and is light and breathable, making it the best fabric for summer bedding.

Satin
Satin, a more sumptuous fabric for pillowcases, is soft and gentle on the skin. You can get softer, smoother skin and hair by using a satin pillowcase, which is a great perk if you're looking for ways to improve your hair and skin. In addition to looking great, satin has another benefit: it keeps you from wrinkling.

Silk
Silk, a natural fabric, is more delicate than satin but provides the same attractive qualities. Silk pillowcases are more expensive than those made from other materials because they are sold by weight.

Pillow Cover

Creative Gift Wrap
Have you ever had to wrap an odd-shaped present like a gift basket or football? Wrapping paper doesn't do it—paper tears and rips and the gift looks hideous. But a pillowcase can solve the problem. Lay the gift inside, pull the pillowcase tightly closed and tie a pretty ribbon around the top.

Dog Toys
If you have a few polyester pillowcases lying around, they'll make terrific tug-of-war toys for your small dogs. Lay each one out lengthwise and roll them tightly to create thin snakes; then tie a knot at both ends and one in the center of each snake. Your pooch will have hours of fun with you and their new tug-of-war toy.

Cat Beds
But don't leave your kitty out—she deserves something special too. Give her a nice, warm place to nap with a pillowcase transformed into a cat hammock.

Packing Materials for Breakables
Wrap your breakable items, such as delicate china or knick-knacks, in your extra pillowcases; then carefully pack them in the moving boxes. Your fragile items will be well protected.

Patchwork
If your pillowcases are still unstained and the fabric remains good quality, you can cut them into squares and use them to stitch a quilt or patch up holey jeans. Who knows? You may even start a new design trend!

How to Make a Pillow Case in Easy Steps

Step 1:Cut off all the selveges so that all three fabrics are exactly the same width. The fabrics that I used were 44″-45″ wide so they made the perfect width for these pillowcases. Just make sure that when you cut the selveges that each of the three fabrics are the same width. If you are unfamiliar with what the selvege is, it is the finished edge of the fabric that is placed by the loom when it is woven so that the fabric does not unravel. The selvege measures between 1/2″ and 3/4″ wide on average.

Step 2: Press the cuff fabric and the accent fabric in half lengthwise wrong sides together. Open the cuff fabric and lay it right sides up on your cutting table. Lay the main fabric rides side up on top of the cuff fabric and lining up the raw edges. Then lay the folded accent fabric on top of the other two layers again lining up all of the raw edges. Pin the layers together.

Step 3: Roll up the main fabric like a burrito and place it into the fold of the cuff fabric. Fold the cuff fabric over the rolled up outer fabric and line it up with the raw edges on the other side. You will have the main fabric inside of the cuff fabric Pin then sew using a 1/4″ seam allowance along the length of the fabrics through all layers making sure not to catch the rolled up fabrics. You will now have a tube of fabrics.

Step 4: Reach in and pull out the outer fabric from the tube. You will notice that the cuff and the accent fabric seams are completely enclosed for a nice clean finish.

Step 5: With right sides together sew the side and the bottom and you have completed your pillow case in 15 minutes and 5 steps. If you want you can serge or zigzag the seams to prevent fraying or use a French seam. I honestly just left mine and they are fine.

Why Should You Clean Pillows?

Regular cleaning of your pillows is beneficial for a couple of reasons. As we stated before, pillows are full of dust, body oils, and skin cells which build up over time, making them both unhygienic and uncomfortable to sleep on.

Cleaning pillows regularly will help keep them fresh and provide a better sleeping experience. Cleaning pillow cases are also important as they prevent the build-up of dirt and bacteria over time - helping to guarantee you get a clean and comfortable sleeping experience every night!

Some of the reasons why you should clean your pillows and pillowcases regularly include the following:

Lurking bacteria: Yes, you read that correctly; there are lurking bacteria that can be found in your pillows. For example, let's say you are sick. When this occurs, you sleep on your pillowcases and pillow, allowing leftover bacteria to find shelter within these items.

Dead skin and hair will be eliminated: Pillowcases often contain a lot of human skin cells due to contact with your face during sleep. Cleaning pillowcases help the pillow stay fresher and can also reduce the presence of dust mites that thrive when surrounded by skin cells or salvia.

Getting rid of allergens: Allergic reactions are also likely to be reduced if cleaning your pillows is a regular habit. Cleaning your pillows removes other allergens, such as pet dander, mold, mildew, and pollen, which can cause breathing difficulties and allergic reactions.

Professional Tips for Cleaning Pillow Case

Decorative pillows are one of the easiest ways to add flair to your living space. However, dingy, dirty or dull pillow case can have the opposite effect by detracting from the beauty of your home rather than enhancing it.

Read the care label

  • Some throw pillow covers are very delicate and require special care. Others can simply be tossed in the washing machine. Determining the best cleaning method for each pillow. The manufacturer’s label should provide details regarding cleaning.
  • Cotton and synthetic fibers can both be cleaned with water, while silk and velvet fabrics require dry cleaning fluid. If the throw pillow is without a tag, default to the gentlest cleaning method.

Test before proceeding
Testing your cleaning method in an inconspicuous area of the fabric before proceeding can spare you the heartache of accidentally damaging your pillows. Using a white towel dampened with either water or fabric-specific cleaning fluid, gently dab at the soiled area. Hold for a few seconds, then check the towel for signs of color transfer which indicate that this method of cleaning is not suitable. After allowing the spot to dry, inspect the area for signs of damage, such as spotting and fading.

Hand wash, whenever possible
After determining the ideal cleaning solution, spot cleaning a throw pillow cover is the safest technique — particularly if it is intricately adorned or especially delicate. If necessary, follow up by hand washing your pillow case with a cleaning solution. Remember: gentle supplies and methods are always preferable when it comes to cleaning pillow case.

Launder with delicates
If you choose to machine wash your throw pillow cases, launder them as you would any delicate items using a mesh laundry bag and the delicate cycle. Again, it’s important to use the mildest possible detergent. For deeply soiled pillows, a color-safe prewash spray can help remove stains.

Air or tumble dry
While air drying is the best method, it is possible to dry throw pillow cases in the dryer using the lowest no-heat setting, such as tumble, air dry, or fluff. After removing the decorative pillowcases from the dryer, hang them or lay them out flat to maintain their shape and allow to dry completely before re-stuffing.

FAQ

Q: What is a pillow case used for?

A: Pillowcases have many purposes and benefits, but their main one is to protect both your pillow and your face. If you don't have that protective cover, you will be exposing your face to a lot of bacteria and your pillow to a lot of moisture and oil, so it's best to keep that pillowcase on at all times.

Q: What is the difference between a pillow case and a pillow cover?

A: A pillow cover is what you insert your pillow into and usually has a zipper. It protects your pillow. A pillowcase is the pretty one that matches your sheets, you insert the pillow with cover into the pillowcase.

Q: What is the case of a pillow called?

A: Pillowcases (also known as pillowcase protectors) complement bed linen by adding utility and comfort. They not only protect pillows from stains, grime, dust, and face oils, but they also offer a soothing and appealing touch.

Q: Why do people use pillow cases?

A: Pillows and mattress covers not only protect from dust and germs, but also make mattresses and pillows look more organized. Protectors are very important as it is very difficult to wash mattresses and pillows. So it is easier to wash these products when they get dirty or once in a while.

Q: Do all pillows need pillowcases?

A: In principle, you can sleep straight on a pillow without using a pillowcase. In fact, it is recommended that you use a pillowcase for simpler washing. Otherwise, why is there a pillowcase? You can replace your pillowcase frequently, but you will not change your pillow frequently.

Q: How do you describe a pillow case?

A: A pillowcase is a cover for a pillow that can be removed and washed. Remove and wash used pillowcases. One of the pillows on the bed has a different pillowcase from the others.

Q: Should I put a pillow case on my pillow?

A: Most people think a pillow case is all you need, but pillows need an extra layer of protection. A pillow protector has a zipper; whereas, a pillow case does not. A pillow protector helps protect your pillow shell from yellowing.

Q: Do you wash pillows or just pillow cases?

A: Even a regularly washed pillowcase is porous, so it won't protect your pillow from accumulating dirt and bacteria over time. That's why it's important to also wash the pillow itself. One thing to remember: Your pillow might accumulate different levels of dirt and allergens depending on what material it's made from.

Q: Which pillow case is better?

A: For a more luxurious feel, opt for silk or satin options. Both the Slip Pure Silk Pillowcase (our best silk pick) and the Kitsch Satin Pillowcase (our best satin pick) feel buttery-smooth to the touch and offer impressive hair and skin benefits.

Q: What is a standard pillow case called?

A: Are you a lover of tradition? 'Housewife' pillowcases (also known as 'Standard' pillowcases) are basically the standard UK pillowcase size. They have a solid sewn edge, which fits perfectly around your 'Standard' pillow – measuring 50x75cm. The Housewife Pillowcase fits any standard pillow (size 50x75cm).

Q: What is the point of pillow cases?

A: Cleanliness: Pillow protectors help keep your bed pillows clean. Pillows are vulnerable to all sorts of stains, including moisture from sweat and oil from your head, liquid spills, and stains from cosmetics, moisturizers, and even hair products.

Q: What are the three types of pillowcases?

A: Pillowcases play an essential role in protecting your pillows and keeping them clean. The three primary types of pillowcases are housewife, oxford, and bag. Housewife and bag pillowcases are the most commonly used as regular pillowcases, while oxford pillowcases are often used for sham pillows.

Q: How often should you wash your pillowcase?

A: For a better night's sleep and reduced issues with skin conditions and allergic reactions, change your pillowcase at least once weekly. Clean pillowcases are essential, and you should consider changes more frequently if you allow pets on your bed.

Q: What color pillowcase is best?

A: Blue is the number one choice as it “tends to evoke a calming effect on the brain, and is the colour most associated with rest and relaxation.” All blues are a good choice, but lighter and more muted tones give your pillows a tranquil feel.

Q: Is it better to sleep on silk or satin pillowcase?

A: Satin and silk pillowcases both have a supple texture that can promote skin and hair health. As a natural fiber, silk is typically more breathable than satin made with synthetic materials. Hot sleepers may therefore prefer the superior temperature control of silk pillowcases.

Q: What kind of pillowcase should I use?

A: A silk pillowcase is the best type to buy. This fabric is natural, low in static, sustainable antibacterial, hypoallergenic, luxurious and kind to your hair and skin. It's also surprisingly strong and long-lasting.
