So these napkins can be used for wedding, restaurants, dinner, bathroom and more occasions.

Nowadays, napkins have become an important part of people's daily life, which can help us maintain cleanliness during meals and prevent food residue from dirtying clothes or tables.

Type of Napkin

Fabric Napkins

Fabric napkins are a classic choice for formal dining occasions. They are typically made from cotton, linen, or a blend of fibers. Fabric napkins come in various sizes, colors, and patterns, allowing you to choose the perfect one to complement your table setting. They can be reused, making them not only eco-friendly but also adding a touch of elegance to any meal.

Paper Napkins

Paper napkins are a convenient and disposable option for everyday use. They are widely available and come in a range of colors and designs to suit different preferences and occasions. Paper napkins are perfect for picnics, outdoor gatherings, or casual meals where easy cleanup is desired.

Decorative Napkins

Decorative napkins are designed to make a statement. They often feature intricate patterns, embroidered details, or artistic prints. Decorative napkins can be made of fabric or paper, and they are a great way to add a touch of elegance and style to special occasions or holiday celebrations.

Pocket Napkins

Pocket napkins, also known as “napkin folds,” are creatively folded napkins that serve both functional and aesthetic purposes. They can be folded into various shapes, such as fans, flowers, or utensil holders, adding a decorative element to table settings. Pocket napkins are commonly used in formal events, restaurants, or high-end dining establishments.

How to Choose the Right Napkin

The type of event you are hosting: Placement napkins are typically used for formal events, while material and color napkins can be used for both formal and informal events.

The color of your tablecloth: If you have a white or cream tablecloth, choose a napkin that will complement it. For example, if you have a white tablecloth, you could choose a white placement napkin or a colored material or paper napkin.

The number of guests you are expecting: If you are expecting a lot of guests, choose a napkin that is large enough to cover the entire table. For smaller events, choose a napkin that is smaller in size.

The type of food you will be serving: If you are serving messy foods, such as barbecued chicken or spaghetti, choose a material napkin that can be easily wiped clean. If you are serving lighter foods, such as salad or cake, choose a paper or color napkin.

White Cotton Dinner Napkin

Material of Napkin

Cotton
Fat quarters are a fun and easy fabric for making napkins. They’re already almost the right size for smaller lunch napkins or smaller if you’re using “proper” napkin sizes. If you’re just using your napkins for casual family meals, then the fat quarters are great. The typical cotton of fat quarters also absorbs well.

Linen
Like cotton, linen is very absorbent and gets softer with each washing. Linen is also surprisingly good at resisting stains. Linen is a touch harder to work with when sewing your own napkins though, so I may not be the best choice for your first go at making napkins.

Polyester
You could use a polyester or polyester blend for making your napkins. These don’t absorb as well, but they are more wrinkle-resistant than cotton and linen.

Application of Napkins

The Napkin Begins a Meal
Your napkin signals the start of a meal. If you are hosting, you should lead the way by first placing your napkin in your lap so that your guests will follow suit.

Catches Crumbs
We don't often stop to think about the true purpose of placing a napkin in our laps. Until we spill or drop something.

Wipes Mouth Edges
Gently wipe the sides of your mouth as needed to remove crumbs or sauces.

If you hold your napkin so the inside of the top layer is used to wipe, you can avoid having a visibly stained napkin in your lap and keep the stain from jumping onto you or the tablecloth.

Contains Coughs and Sneezes
Napkins come in handy when you need to cough or sneeze at the table. Cover your mouth and nose with your napkin to help keep germs contained.

Napkins End the Meal
When the meal is done, loosely fold your napkin and place it on the left side of your place setting.

3 Simple Ways to Fold a Napkin

Fabric napkins add a touch of elegance to your holiday meals. For most of us, it’s only during these meals that we even bother with fabric napkins. Instead of folding them in a rectangle or square this year, impress your guest with some fancy napkin folding skills. Don’t worry — these three folds are easy to do and will make a dinner guest feel like they are dining at a 5-star restaurant.

The Cone
This simple fold is elegant and easy to do. Follow the numbered steps below with images ordered from left.

  • Lay the napkin flat with the right (front) side down.
  • Fold the napkin in half and turn the open end away from you.
  • Fold the napkin into quarters. Turn the napkin so that the open end is facing away from you.
  • Fold the top layer all the way forward and press it down flat.
  • Turn the napkin over and fold the left hand side of the napkin over two-thirds of the way.

Then fold the right hand side of the napkin over to match the left-hand side. Tuck the corners of the napkin into the left-hand side flap. Flip it over and there you have it — the cone. Tuck an herb or flower sprig in the pocket or flatware.

The Flatware Pocket
Create a little pocket to tuck flatware for this classic presentation. Follow the numbered steps below with images ordered from left.

  • Lay the napkin flat with the right (front) side down.
  • Fold the napkin in half and turn the open end toward you.
  • Fold the napkin into quarters. Turn the napkin so the open corner is facing away and to the left.
  • Fold the top layer of napkin in half diagonally and press it down.

Flip the napkin over so that the open corner is now facing away and to the right. 5. Fold the right side back one-third of the way and press it down. 6. Then, fold the left side back also one-third of the way and press. Flip the napkin over and insert your flatware.

Three Point Fold
This napkin fold looks pretty on its own, but you can embellish it with greenery or even a piece of fruit laid on top of the napkin. Follow the numbered steps below with images ordered from left.

  • Lay the napkin flat with the right (front) side down.
  • Fold the napkin in half diagonally with the middle point of the triangle facing down.
  • Fold the right corner of the napkin over to the left.
  • Then, fold the right side of the napkin towards the left until the desired "necktie shape" is formed on the napkin.

Best ways to clean napkins

The fabric of napkins can be cleaned in many ways depending on the type of stain and intensity of the stain. Some of the common stains that are found on the napkins for the dining table include-

Wine stains
Dinner is not a perfect dinner if wine is not served. But wine spills are the most terrible stains on the napkins to be removed. Napkins for the dining table with wine stain can easily be cleaned with ice-cold water. To remove stains of wine, dab a towel with ice-cold water and put it beneath the stain on a napkin, sprinkle a little amount of table salt on the stain and rub it with your finger. This will gently remove stain from any kind of fabric of napkin and you get a clean napkin for next use.

Oil stains
A fine meal cooked in oil tastes better and also results in tough stains on the napkins. Oil stains are the toughest stains to be removed from the napkins. Dishwasher detergent is the best solution for removing such tough stains from the napkins. Fill a tub with hot water and add some dishwasher detergent to it and soak the napkins for the dining table into it. Then rinse it with clean water to get clean napkins.

Brighten up clean napkins
Clean napkins of light colour look better if they have a special brightness. Napkins for the dining table can be brightened up with the help of non-chlorine bleach after detergent wash. This adds some brightness to the cloth and gives a shine of the new fabric. Cotton napkins can be added to your kitchen from Ellementry which can easily be brightened up at every wash.

Starched napkins for dining table
Clean napkins if washed with starch, gives a used napkin a freshness of new. After washing the napkins in detergent, soak them in starch water to give them a stiffness of the fresh fabric. This makes your napkins stiff and easy to fold as per the decor of the table for the next use.

Store for next use
Napkins for the dining table are made of fabric so that they can be used more than once. To maintain the hygiene napkins are washed and dried properly. But to maintain the quality of a clean napkin it must be starched and ironed and stored in a cupboard or drawer. To give the napkins a fresh smell it can also be soaked in some fragrancing liquids in the last wash.

FAQ

Q: What is a napkin used for?

A: A napkin, serviette or face towelette is a square of cloth or paper tissue used at the table for wiping the mouth and fingers while eating. It is also sometimes used as a bib by tucking it into a shirt collar.

Q: What is the correct word for napkin?

A: Napkins, Serviettes or face cloths are pieces of cloth used in dining situations for wiping the mouth and fingers to clean excess food etc from your face and protect you from spills and crumbs which you may acquire during a meal. The word Napkin comes from the French word nappe which is a cloth for covering a table.

Q: What not to do with a napkin?

A: Don't unfold your napkin above the table. Unfold your napkin, just above your lap, underneath the table. Don't blot lipstick on a cloth napkin or use it as a handkerchief. Don't place your cloth or paper napkin on your plate after eating.

Q: What is proper napkin etiquette?

A: Where is the napkin supposed to go? If you have enough room between place settings, the napkin should go to the left of the fork(s). If you don't have room, the napkin should be placed on the plate or charger. It should never go in the water glass or tea cup, no matter how pretty it makes the table setting look.

Q: Is it cheaper to use paper towels or napkins?

A: Moving to cloth napkins is the right move because compared to paper towels it will save you money and time as well! If you are washing your cloth napkins regularly then it is equal in terms of being hygienic when compared to paper towels.

Q: What is the difference between a buffet napkin and a dinner napkin?

A: An informal dinner napkin, the kind you'd have at your home as a sort of “everyday” napkin is typically 18 to 20 inches square. Finally, there's the buffet napkin, which tends to be about 18 to 24 inches square.

Q: Should you leave napkin on chair or table?

A: Some experts will suggest that the napkin should be placed on the chair if you plan on returning to the table, for example after taking a call or using the restroom, and on the table or in the center of the plate at the end of the meal when you depart.

Q: Do napkins go on the left or right?

A: Place the dinner plate in the center, and the napkin to the left of the plate. (Alternately, you can opt for the napkin on top of the dinner plate to mix things up.) Add the fork on top of the napkin or to the right of the napkin, and the knife and spoon to the right of the plate.

Q: Where does your napkin go when you are finished with the meal?

A: There are those that follow tradition, and there are those – like myself – that follow logic. The short, logic-based answer is that you gather up your napkin and place it to the left of your plate. You do this when you've finished eating the meal, and if you need to get up during the meal.

Q: Is it rude to put your paper napkin on your plate?

A: If you love cloth napkins, go for it. If you'd rather use paper, that's OK, too. There are some beautiful paper ones available now and they can go with any theme. In either case, you usually just fold them over once and put them on the plate's left side (your view while facing the plate) under the fork.

Q: What do you do with your napkin if you have to excuse yourself during a meal?

A: If you must excuse yourself, place your napkin on your chair (if it is an upholstered seat, be sure to have the soiled side facing up). By doing so, you are discreetly not calling more attention that you have left the table.

Q: What do you do during a napkin test?

A: A simple napkin test provides a head-to-head comparison of the value, equity, and mortgage debt of your relinquished and replacement asset to show if you will expose yourself to any taxable boot in the deal. The napkin test should be used as a rough guide only.

Q: What are the 3 rules in table napkin placement?

A: If you have enough room between place settings, the napkin should go to the left of the fork(s). If you don't have room, the napkin should be placed on the plate or charger. It should never go in the water glass or tea cup, no matter how pretty it makes the table setting look.
